Travelers’ parasocial interactions in online travel communities

This study explores whether, through parasocial interaction (PSI), trust in other travel community users drives travelers’ satisfaction with those communities as well as their travel experiences. It further examines the moderating effect of the quantity of contact with the communities. A total of 334 responses from travel community users were collected in South Korea. The results suggest all trust dimensions (competence, benevolence, and honesty) are significant in developing PSI, predicting community satisfaction and travel satisfaction, while quantity of contact has a positive moderating effect only on the relationship between PSI and travel satisfaction. Theoretical and managerial implications are also discussed.     

Developing a competency model for private club managers

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties and factor structure of the competency model for private club managers. This study developed and identified a valid and reliable model for managerial competencies that can be applied to private club managers. A total of 596 club managers responded to the survey, and the respondents were randomly divided into two subsamples: sample A was used for the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and sample B was used for the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). EFA resulted in 58 items, consisting of 10 dimensions, and the CFA confirmed the 10 dimensions of managerial competencies model (51 items), consisting of (1) golf, (2) facility maintenance, (3) human resources–legal, (4) leadership–interpersonal, (5) food and beverage, (6) club governance, (7) sports and recreation, (8) accounting, (9) marketing, and (10) strategic management. A model was developed in order to further understand important managerial competencies needed for managing a private club operation in the United States. This model can be used to update certification requirements and professional development programs for club managers, as well as update university curricular offerings.     

The relationship between organizational commitment and contextual performance among private club leaders

The present study examined the factor structure of, and relationships between, multi-dimensional constructs of organizational commitment (OC) and contextual performance (CP) in the context of the private club industry. Data were collected from private club leaders (N = 549) via a web survey. Structural equation modeling showed that affective commitment (AC) had the strongest positive effects on both dimensions of CP. Continuance commitment (CC) related negatively to both dimensions of CP; however, the relationship between CC and job dedication only was statistically significant. Normative commitment was associated positively with both dimensions of CP, but these two relationships were not statistically significant.

Career orientations of R&D professionals in Korea

This study empirically examined the relationships between career orientations of R&D professionals in Korea and other personal characteristics such as demographic factors, work-related outcomes, and reward preferences. The results, based on the survey about 1,240 technical people in 15 R&D organizations, revealed five distinctive and independent career orientations: technical, manager, project, technical transfer, and entrepreneurial orientations. The career orientations of R&D professionals are found to be different between private and public sectors and to be associated with their education level and organizational tenure. It is also observed that R&D professionals with different career orientations exhibit different work-related outcomes and reward preferences. For instance, technical-oriented professionals tend to be more educated, to exhibit better job attitudes and technical performances, and to favor professional rewards. While those with manager and transfer orientations are longer-tenured, have more positive job attitudes but lower technical performances, and prefer social status and prestige and career rewards in their organization. Both project- and entrepreneur-oriented professionals exhibit a less positive attitude toward their organizations, but seek different reward schemes: the former pursues challenging R&D projects with autonomy and the latter favors financial returns. Finally, the implications of these findings for managing careers of R&D professionals are discussed.

中国环境税的功能检视与立法路径

环境税因其具有有效筹集环保资金、调控污染与破坏环境资源的行为、提高经济增长质量和维护社会环境公平等功能而领先于传统的命令-控制型环境管理模式。但在推行中可能出现双重红利引发偏差、转嫁税负影响减排以及重效率轻公平等现象,产生功能异变。我国政府确立了税收手段保护和改善环境的治理思路,厘清环境税所具备的功能、防范其发生功能异变、明晰新形势下环境税的功能需求是引导我国环境税制顺利推行的前提。构建符合中国本土化的环境税制、实现环境税的功能应当从健全法律运行体制、明晰政府事权责划分以及完善保障性制度建设等方面进行探索和思考。     

Facts and myths about Korea's economic past

The orthodoxy in South and North Korean historiography states that Japan's annexation of Korea in 1910 wrought havoc on indigenous economic development and started an era of exploitation lasting until 1945. Recent studies show the claim to be based less upon facts than upon Marxist dogma and nationalist sentiment. During the nineteenth century, Korea was not on the verge of modern economic growth, but in demographic and economic decline. Living standards improved and industrialisation occurred in the context of rapid population growth during the colonial period due to transfer of capital and advanced technology from Japan.
